Helvellyn climb

frequently asked questions

Helvellyn is achievable for most active people. As this is a group event, you will be expected to keep up with the rest of the group and therefore you should be comfortable with 6-7 hour hikes with a small backpack. If you are worried about being too slow then please get in touch so we can discuss your options. We also offer walking specific fitness programmes and private guiding.

Our start location will be at the National Trust car park near Thirlmere reservoir (CA12 4TW). The exact start point will be e-mailed over 2 weeks prior to your hike.

Expect to meet between 8 and 9 am but the exact timings will be e-mailed 2 weeks prior to your trip.

You can park at either Swirls or Wythburn car parks (CA12 4TW), both of which are pay and display.

That really depends on how quick you walk! During our group hikes, our aim is to stay together and walk as a one. But we do have the option to split the group if needed as there will be more than one leader present. Typically it will take six to eight hours to get to the top and back down. Our aim isn’t to race up the mountain, instead our focus is on ensuring everybody has a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

Please note. There are no stops for water refills or food along the route, so you should bring sufficient water (at least 2-3 litres per person) and plenty of food.

There are toilets situated at Swirls car park. Once on the path there are no public toilets.

A very high percentage of our walkers achieve a successful summit! Our leaders will always do their best to get you there. However, for safety reasons it may not always be possible. Whilst the summer months bring calmer mountain weather, it is important to note the weather can change at any time. In the unlikely event of poor weather, the guide reserves the right to turn the group around before the summit, in the interest of safety.
